NACO Names Claudio Rojas as CEO

As a proud NACO member, York Angels is delighted with the announcement of Claudio Rojas, as the new NACO CEO.

Congratulations Claudio!

We looking forward to collaborating and working together!

TORONTO, ON April 26, 2019 – The National Angel Capital Organization (“NACO”) today announces the appointment of Claudio Rojas as its new Chief Executive Officer. As Canada’s entrepreneurial ecosystem evolves from start-up to scale-up, Claudio is stepping into the leadership ranks of Canada’s only national industry association focused on improving access to critical early-stage capital and mentorship for Canadian entrepreneurs.

Building upon NACO’s exceptional achievements under the leadership of Yuri Navarro, there is an opportunity to increase our level of collaboration with other organizations impacting Canadian entrepreneurial activity. It is vital to continue to bridge and grow Canada’s innovation ecosystem by increasing diversity, inclusion and representation at all levels.

Industry leaders across Canada are coming together to build a business community that better reflects our population, including supporting women in STEM. NACO’s mandate is to accelerate the pace of change to usher in a more diverse and inclusive economy.

“As a national organization with a long history of helping to professionalize angel capital investing into Canadian companies, NACO is uniquely positioned to unlock the early-stage capital and mentorship that our founders need to grow and scale more rapidly,” says Rojas. “I’m excited to have an amazing operational team and the guidance of our highly accomplished board to bring transformative and positive change in a wide range of areas that will impact our ability to create, grow and scale innovative companies in Canada.”

Rojas has held the roles of founder, managing director, board member, steering committee member and advisor to several prominent organizations helping to advance Canada’s vibrant innovation ecosystem. He brings over 14 years of experience in finance, law and business, along with a long-term entrepreneurial mindset and thought leadership on founder-run companies.

“The NACO Board of Directors is thrilled to have Claudio join the NACO team,” says Sandi Gilbert, Chair of NACO’s Board of Directors. “Claudio brings a broad set of skills to our organization and we are lucky to have someone that is both well-known in the NACO community, yet brings a new vision of how we can increase collaboration and partnerships with governments at all levels and other stakeholders to benefit our membership of angels, incubators and accelerators.”

Rojas holds an MBA from the Ivey Business School, Juris Doctor from the Faculty of Law at Western University, has achieved all three levels of the CFA examinations, is a practitioner member of the European Corporate Governance Institute, and is a lawyer member of the Bar of Ontario, Canada.

“I’m passionate about helping Canadian founders scale their companies into global champions,” said Rojas. “We have extraordinary entrepreneurs across the country working tirelessly to build companies that will create the next wave of good paying jobs for Canadians. Beyond capital, angel investors bring critical resources that our founders need to scale, particularly mentorship, experience and connections to industry. NACO is Canada’s leading organization helping to unlock the early-stage resources that Canadian companies need to grow and scale globally.”

Thank You To Our Sponsors

Happy Holidays!

As the year draws to a close, we would like to take a moment to thank you for your ongoing support of York Angel Investors and start-up ecosystem.

This year YAI turned 10th, and with that milestone anniversary came other milestones to celebrate!
In 2018, York Angels, with your kind assistance, was able to

  • Add 27 new angel investors to the ecosystem,
  • Invest $7.25 million
  • Into 53 companies

But that was just the beginning of the good news.

We were delighted that Enthusiast Gaming had its IPO in October, and that HTBase was acquired in December by Juniper, providing our angels with a 10.8x exit! As well, many other portfolio companies excelled. Kepler Communications raised a further round at a substantially higher valuation, and launched another satellite; and Dapasoft, into which YAI originally invested over $4.7million, has combined with iSecurity, to form a company with $25 Million in revenue. And that’s just naming a few of our all-star portfolio companies!

This has been an exceptionally strong year for the angels and portfolio companies of YAI.

And all of this would not be possible without the support of our angels and ecosystem. Thank you all for your referrals, for volunteering, for mentoring entrepreneurs, for investing not only money, but also time, into promising start-ups. Thank you for your belief in the possible, in the opportunities.

May your holidays be filled with family and friends, rest and relaxation.

Just a reminder that our YAI offices will be closed from December 22nd to January 2nd, so that we may return energized for the great opportunities ahead in 2019!

We wish you and yours a very safe & Happy Holiday, from our YAI Family

– Jess, Ana, Cass & Zach

That’s a wrap on NACO World Summit 2018!

From September 25th – 27th, over 500 angel investors from across Canada and from around the globe, came to Toronto for 3 days of seminars, insightful keynotes, thought-provoking panels, phenomenal networking….and lots of fun!

York Angels was the best represented angel group at the Summit, with over 20 members in attendance. Missing from this photo taken at the Casa Loma welcome Reception- JP, Marat, Chris G., and Nikhil.

Over 135 speakers that traveled to share their knowledge and perspectives on a wide range of topics relating to the theme – The Era of Dynamic Disruption. From keynotes to panels, there was lots of food for thought. It was a pleasure to have Hon. Minister Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion share her vision and insights regarding investing in innovation and business, and announce some renewed FedDev funding. As well, Mayor John Tory attended the Gala Awards Dinner and shared his thoughts on the importance of the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor as an Innovation hub, and the importance of leveraging technology for efficiencies.

Congratulations to YAI Member Randy Stewart Thompson (OKR /Valhalla) on winning Angel of the Year! So deserved!

Our members also enjoyed a full pass to all of the Elevate events, including AL Gore speaking!

Many thanks to the dedicated NACO World Summit Programming Committee for their vision and dedication, to shape this amazing event. Thank you also to the whole team at NACO for all their hard work. We had a great time!

And thank you to all the YAI angel investors that attended. Thank you for taking the time to come together; to learn, network and build relationships. May this be a spring board for more collaboration, and greater investment in innovative start-ups!

We are already looking forward to next year’s World Summit in Calgary this June!

Huge Congratulations to YAI Portfolio Company Enthusiast Gaming on going Public!

Many angel investors from York Angel Investors, in August 2016, initially invested over $420k in a young, dynamic company with ambitious dreams and a driven team. The company was Enthusiast Gaming, and what an interesting two years it has been! Through more financing rounds and acquisitions, Enthusiast Gaming has kept things exciting.
Today, Enthusiast Gaming Holdings Inc. (TSXV: EGLX), a digital media company building the largest community of authentic gamers, announced that its shares began trading when markets opened, at on the TSX Venture Exchange.
Google EGLX.V for the latest trading details. Many of us invested at around a quarter, the end of the first day closed at $1.07 was a nice bump!
“As one of the few gaming companies trading publicly, we’re incredibly proud to announce this milestone in Enthusiast’s history,” said Enthusiast Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer Menashe Kestenbaum. “We look forward to a beneficial relationship with our shareholders as we carry out our vision of growing our platform both online and through our Enthusiast gaming Live Expo, EGLX.”
Congratulations to the team on this exciting day from your YAI Family!
Onwards and upwards!
