Last week York Angels had its AGM, and the Board of Directors and team would like to thank our angels and ecosystem partners for making it a stellar year.
York Angels’ had a strong year of growth. We had 35 new members join, making us the largest group in Ontario and second largest in Canada. Our collective teamwork led to the completion of 76 deals the last year and a total of 210 rounds of investment since we began in 2008. YAI invested over $8.5M in the previous fiscal year, and that the brings the total invested over the lifetime of York Angels to $27.5MM. As well, we had 2 exits last fall, which always makes investors happy! We are an active group who strive to have a positive impact on the early-stage ecosystem. Thanks to each of you for your contributions to our collective achievement. We have so much of which to be proud!
Each year we like to celebrate the contributions of our angels and partners, and we honoured several people last Thursday.
Angel of the Year was awarded to Jennifer Renda for her dedication to the York Angels through mentoring, referrals and investments, as well as representing YAI at ecosystem events and on panels.
Thank you, Jennifer!
Ecosytem Partner of the Year was presented to Innovation York (Launch YU and YSpace) for their dedication to supporting early- stage companies and their community-focused collaboration.
Thanks Sarah, David and Nilay!
As well, we inducted 2 angels into our Hall of Fame, recognizing their outstanding volunteer service to York Angels.

A message from Jess:
I’ve been reflecting on the evolution of York Angels, as I have had the pleasure of being Executive Director for 5 years, as of June 1st. While group has grown a lot in that period, more importantly, we have become an angel family and part of a close-knit ecosystem.
I am proud of this amazing group. I am proud to be a part of this family. While I am stepping down as Executive Director at the end of June, to pursue new opportunities within our angel investing community, I look forward to continuing to be a member of York Angels, and remaining active in this ecosystem.
It has been an honour and pleasure to work with the dedicated team that run York Angels. Thank you for your friendship and support. Thank you also to our devoted Board of Directors for your time, effort and mentorship. And to all the ecosystem partners that have made collaboration such a joy, I thank you.
Please join me in offering a warm welcome to York Angels’ own, Terry Mocherniak, who has been appointed the interim ED starting in July, to handle the search for our new leader. I know we will all be excited to meet the new Executive Director early in the Fall, and to see York Angels continue to flourish.
I am looking forward to seeing you soon at York Angel meetings and other ecosystem events. Again, thank you for an incredible 5 years.
